How to Spot Fake Diamonds

spot fake diamonds

Currently, there are many fake diamonds, low-quality diamonds on the market. Therefore, many customers will wonder how to distinguish the real diamond to avoid buying fake goods. In order to help customers answer the above questions, we would like to share with you two ways to distinguish genuine and quality diamonds.

Method 1: Observe with the Naked Eyes

The brightness: real diamonds are more sparkling than fake diamonds. Looking at real diamonds will see a shredded splinter in the middle of the diamond, the fake diamonds almost nonexistent or have but converge to the heart of the bottom. That is why people often want a real diamond engagement ring.

Thermal conductivity: Diamonds have higher thermal conductivity than any type of stone, so in the same temperature environment, when touched, the real diamonds will be cooler. When we blow into the real diamond, the stone will glow (vaporize) very quickly, while the fake diamond will light up slowly.

Light: Diamonds have high light extraction so it is very bright, fake diamonds have low light extraction, so it will be milky as there is a thin layer of smoke on the surface.

Cut: When placing the diamond on the eyes level and looking horizontally at the sides we will see clearly. Fake diamonds will have two or three lines cut inside.

Water: drop a small amount of water on the surface of the stone, real diamonds water will spread slowly and fake diamonds will spill out very quickly.

Friction: Grinding lightly through the sandpaper, fake diamonds will fade away, in contrast, real diamonds are not affected. However, this method is not recommended.

Method 2: You can Observe, Distinguish with a Magnifying Glass

Diamonds are very hard (10 Mohs), thanks to which they have very high gloss. When the cutter gauge seems to be thinner than it is, due to the high extraction of diamonds, the pseudomonas has no apparently shorter sensation.

When viewed through the magnifying glass, the contours of the cut diamonds are sharp, diamonds are faint, sharp, curved or rounded.

Here are some experiences to help identify real diamonds, pseudo-naked eye or simple equipment. Today, with modern science, a diamond test machine has been developed. However, the use of simple methods or modern equipment to check diamonds must pay attention to the conditions for the best identification.

Another point to note is that you can check for real diamonds in just 2 minutes.

Literacy test

If your diamond is not attached to any jewelry, place it in a newspaper. If you can read through and the letters are oblique due to the light effect but still clear, then it is fake diamonds. Real diamonds have complex structures that are not easy for the light to pass completely. It will make the picture blurrier. You can learn more about this test, check out this blog.

Check brightness

Carefully watch the diamond from the top, and from the side. Compare the possibilities of gloss and anti-light.

If you look from the side with more points than when viewed from above, it may be fake diamonds. Because fake diamonds are cut, sharpened, polished … so that looking down from the top it looks exactly like real diamonds, while on the side there is less emphasis.
